Francis of Assisi

🗓️ Oct 4th

Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, Francis of Assisi was born into a time of war and desired to be a man of war. His first taste, however, was bitter; he was one of a handful of survivors and spent a year as a Prisoner of War. Nonetheless, he kept trying to return to the front lines until a dream and a disease finally kept him in place. After we was converted, he resumed his old ways of a pilgrim (which is what the crusaders called themselves) and attracted a number of veterans to his order, the Franciscans.

After his death, the Franciscans were granted custody of the Holy Lands by Muslim kings and the Vatican alike. Francis invented Nativity Scenes in 1223 and his order adapted them to create the first Stations of the Cross.
