Jackie Robinson
🗓️ Oct 24th
The future baseball legend was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 3, 1942, just a few months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was not deployed due to an ankle injury but remained on “limited duty” at Ft Riley, KS. There, he met boxer Joe Louis, who helped many black enlisted men break through racist barriers keeping them from becoming commissioned officers. As a First Lieutenant, Robinson was transferred to Ft Hood, TX, where, in July 1944, he refused to move to the back of a military bus driven by a civilian contractor. He was eventually acquitted and received an honorable discharge in November 1944.
