🔊 mtg. with CPT Monteleone
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Hi, how are you?
Logan M Isaac: Fine.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: How can I help you?
Logan M Isaac: I'm trying to get information on this.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: What case? Case number. I know exactly. So I'm the chief of police here. Okay. My name's Kirsten Montani.
Logan M Isaac: Police or sheriffs?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Sheriff? I'm the captain for sheriff's department. Gotcha. So the sheriff's permit contracts for the city of Dana Point.
Logan M Isaac: Oh, okay. But
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: we have our own station here.
Logan M Isaac: Gotcha.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: So the VFW received an email from you?
Laura Isaac: Yeah.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: And they were concerned for your safety.
Logan M Isaac: They, who'd they receive it from?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Your wife?
Logan M Isaac: Uh, did you email them?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: The vfw? Yeah.
Logan M Isaac: No. Did you email the police?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: No. No. She emailed the vfw.
Logan M Isaac: Oh, okay.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: The VFW contacted me and said they were concerned for your safety, so I sent Deputy Sheriffs out to do a welfare check on you.
Logan M Isaac: Oh. Did anybody read the email?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I, I read the email.
Logan M Isaac: Oh, which part of it
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I had concern.
Logan M Isaac: Oh. Which part of
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: your wife is mentioning suicide? Quite often.
Logan M Isaac: Uhhuh
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: [00:01:00] makes it sound like she's concerned for your safety.
Logan M Isaac: Did you read it?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I sure did.
Logan M Isaac: What part of it?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Several times.
Logan M Isaac: What part of it led you to believe that I was at risk?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Well, your wife is mentioning suicide and she's mentioning you
Logan M Isaac: Uhhuh. Do you not? You said you read it though though.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Is it like saying bomb
Laura Isaac: in an airport, you just don't do it?
Logan M Isaac: Yeah. Is it just like a taboo thing that I don't
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: get to? Well, I then explain to me what, what the nature of the email was about.
Cuz you're talking about your husband and then you're talking about suicide.
Laura Isaac: Yeah.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: So I correlate those together. Yeah. That you're concerned for your husband's safety
Logan M Isaac: correlations?
Laura Isaac: No.
Logan M Isaac: Kind of the problem.
Laura Isaac: I mean, he has a therapist, he's like, we have good community around us, like,
Logan M Isaac: Are you,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I mean, it sounds like you guys are doing great, but as, as the chief of police here, I, you ready?
I received it from the vfw. Correct.
Logan M Isaac: I'll, I'll ask again. What part of it led you to believe that I was at risk for suicide?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Well, you and I probably look at things a little differently. I'm, I'm a police officer.
Logan M Isaac: Yeah.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: And you're not. So I look at things as, you know what, if I can help somebody in the community, I'm gonna do that.
Logan M Isaac: But, so you didn't [00:02:00] read anywhere in there that I
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: go.
Logan M Isaac: I, I'm still waiting for an answer. I guess
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I did answer your question.
Logan M Isaac: So you didn't read anywhere, any direct reference to me. Did
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: your wife say, I think he's gonna commit suicide? No, she did not.
Logan M Isaac: Okay, thank
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: you. But there is definitely some correlation in the literature here.
Logan M Isaac: Which
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: correlation mention my hu Did you read this?
Logan M Isaac: I did.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Okay. I read it. Don't you don't think that anybody's
Laura Isaac: for me to hear it too? Cuz I didn't, that was not my, so
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: what was your intent? Let me ask you, what was your intent in.
Laura Isaac: Um, to let them know the impact that it has on a veteran to isolate them, um, from a community, like a place that's supposed to be safe for veterans.
So, yeah. And then to advocate for him, just it sounds like he and this guy did not have, they had a miscommunication. And what's, I guess concerning to me is if you truly, well, I don't know when you received it. This was sent, I received it this morning. Oh, interesting. Okay.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: And that's why somebody went and saw your husband too late.
Laura Isaac: Okay.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: The minute I was aware of it, we act.
Laura Isaac: Okay.
Logan M Isaac: So did Rick say anything in his email or was it, was my understanding from the [00:03:00] officers that it was just an email? This, did Rick say anything?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I met with Rick this morning.
Logan M Isaac: Okay. What did he say?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: And he gave me this and then I said, yeah, I'd like to check on this gentleman.
Logan M Isaac: Okay. So
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: especially if you're one of our VF VFW members,
Logan M Isaac: I'm not anymore. Absolutely. Rick has made that very clear. I'm not a member of VFW anymore.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Okay.
Logan M Isaac: Um,
Laura Isaac: also, I was wondering, um, is it normal in these check-ins to have two people who are armed in like a therapist? Behind a
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: hundred percent. We have a behavioral health bureau and that is completely 100% policy.
Laura Isaac: Like, are they afraid they're gonna get hurt? The therapist,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: well, police officers wear.
Laura Isaac: Yeah,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: always.
Laura Isaac: Yeah.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: So anytime there's a police officer present, they're gonna have a gun on them.
Laura Isaac: No, I know, I know. But just those stance of like the therapist is, there's. They have two people with armed people.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Mm-hmm.
Laura Isaac: as barriers between them.
So I was wondering if they think that,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: well, we don't, we never know what situation we're gonna walk into. I don't know your husband from Adam Mariee,
Logan M Isaac: but you did have this email, right?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I sure did have that email. Okay. And this is what prompted me to send deputies to your home.
Logan M Isaac: Yeah. I'm failing to [00:04:00] understand that correlation that you made based off of,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: and maybe we're.
Differ to differ. I don't know if
Logan M Isaac: you, based off of your or Rick's bias about this had
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: nothing to do with Rick. I read it and I said, I'm gonna send out the behavioral health
Logan M Isaac: care. Rick came to meet with you on
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: your wife's email To Rick?
Logan M Isaac: Yeah. Here. So it mentioned suicide three times.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Mm-hmm. ,
Logan M Isaac: uh,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I don't think
Logan M Isaac: it's, I suspect VFW is one of the many communities aiming to address this suicide crisis.
Just before. She said there is a blurb in the VFWs newsletter, but there's no armed guards at the VFW meetings. ,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I don't know whether
Logan M Isaac: they sent an email that mentioned suicide and yet they didn't get armed guards. And then she goes on, you're oblating. Any semblance of a safe space for veterans like him further isolating And I would even suggest contributing to the suicide
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: crisis.
So I take that, that your wife feels that you're not in a safe space.
Logan M Isaac: Yes. Do you,
Laura Isaac: did you ever think that it would be helpful to reach out to me or Logan, like by phone,
Logan M Isaac: anything, or question Rick about his motives?
Laura Isaac: Yeah,
Logan M Isaac: I mean, it's like a police thing,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: right? I mean, I know Rick personally. I see him. I mean, our offices are across the [00:05:00] street, you know, across from one.
And we work with the VFW, as does the City of Dana Point work.
Logan M Isaac: They said they don't, I wanna make sure I understand. They said they don't work with them. They
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: don't? Don't with them. But we're at events together. Like when we do Veteran's Day ceremony, my, my deputies are there.
Logan M Isaac: Rick has a lot of sway. I understand He doesn't
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: have a lot of sway.
Actually,
Logan M Isaac: he sent two armed police officers to my house.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: He did not. I did as Okay. Then you as Captain Monte Cleone I did.
Logan M Isaac: And I just read three times.
Laura Isaac: I
Logan M Isaac: don't know. So why did he meet with you
Laura Isaac: think that helps people
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: because he was concerned about this particular email?
Logan M Isaac: I don't believe that.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Okay.
Logan M Isaac: Well now there's a
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: case and then we're going to agree to disagree.
Logan M Isaac: Okay? Okay. So back to my question. What out
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: right to send a deputy sheriff to do a welfare check on you?
Logan M Isaac: Yeah,
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: we have every right to do that.
Logan M Isaac: You also have every right to ignore
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: and
Logan M Isaac: you have every
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: right to not answer the door.
Logan M Isaac: I've tried. Yeah, I could have. You're right. But I try to be a polite consider person.
Which, well
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: for
Logan M Isaac: Chuck is a courtesy call.
Laura Isaac: Is there a
Logan M Isaac: reason Rick doesn't seem to have, you guys are standing here watching
Laura Isaac: this. This is really intimidating [00:06:00] for me. At least.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: They're, we were all in a meeting and I was pulled outta my meeting to talk to
Isaac.
Logan M Isaac: That's great. Be a Voy is
Laura Isaac: veteran, not Isaac.
This is Logan.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I thought your name was Isaac.
Logan M Isaac: I'm sorry you thought that you also thought that I was at risk, which is another faulty conclusion. Okay.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Is there anything else I can help you
Logan M Isaac: with? Yes. This case number, what can I get from it?
Laura Isaac: Can we just have like documentation of what happened?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: You can get that through our public, uh, request act.
Okay. We don't provide police reports.
Laura Isaac: Okay. I don't really wanna be in here anymore with all these cops around.
Logan M Isaac: Yeah, it's kind of messed up, isn't it? Yeah. Can I get a pen?
Laura Isaac: Do you wanna just type something? We right down.
Logan M Isaac: Pen.
Laura Isaac: There you go.
Logan M Isaac: You said public relations?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: No. So go on our website or orange county sheriff's dot com.
Logan M Isaac: Mm-hmm. .
And
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: then go to request a report.
Laura Isaac: Do you have to pay?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Uh,
Receptionist: it's a small fee to get it printed
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: out. I think it's like a dollar a page or something. Okay. Yeah, we're not allowed to give out police reports. And this report probably hasn't even been written yet because they were just at your house recently, correct?
That's right.
Laura Isaac: Yeah.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Yeah, like an hour ago. Well, you said you sent them, so I hope you would know when they were there.
Logan M Isaac: Uh, and where on the website you said?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Uh, I, I don't, [00:07:00] it's just ocsd.org,
Logan M Isaac: but it's
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: on the mainstream. And you can type in like search and just say request a police.
Laura Isaac: I was curious how many people this has helped when you send for a
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: wellness check, a, we have a really robust behavioral health bureau, and I mean, I hate to say this, but veterans tend to need some help in that area sometimes.
Are you a veteran pt? I'm not.
Logan M Isaac: Are you a veteran?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Trustee is a very, very problem.
Laura Isaac: Talk to any more cops.
Logan M Isaac: Are you a veteran? No, sir. You, no. That's a lot for not having any, you a veteran. Fascinating.
Laura Isaac: Also, yeah, the having the therapist stand like afraid in the background is not helpful for wellness checks. I mean, as I have a video of what happened today for your feedback.
Okay. Um, I don't know if you hear that from other people, but I don't. But, um, yeah. Thanks though for, I, it's still unclear to me which part besides the word suicide, um, implied that I was afraid for my husband. Um, I'm a clergy, a chaplain at a hospital. I have been trained in mental health crisis. I know what it looks [00:08:00] like.
Um, I would never have guessed that this wording, we
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: weren't trying to cause any harm. Like I said, we honestly wanted to make sure that he's okay. That's it.
Logan M Isaac: You didn't ask. He came to my house with reference.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Yeah, that's, I'm, we're police officers. We don't go anywhere without our guns. That's how we
Logan M Isaac: operate.
Made a phone. , is that not true?
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: But can a phone call determine if you are a danger to yourself? No, it can't.
Logan M Isaac: You could have communicated what you didn't do. Are you, are you We
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: don't, we don't make
Logan M Isaac: phone calls. Phone
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: calls we're not barred. But in this situation, we would not make a phone call. That is not something we would do.
We wanna get our eyes on you. Make sure that you're healthy, you're safe, you're able to care for yourself. You're not a danger to yourself or anybody else
Laura Isaac: that
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: I'm very careful, careful. See the report
Laura Isaac: of what
Logan M Isaac: they said. You could
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: asked. It's probably just gonna be a cat injury welfare check request. . Yeah.
And subject. But Rick
Logan M Isaac: request a check or he
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: didn't? Rick did not. Okay. I, I had concerns, so I sent it and my last name is M O N T e. L E o N E.[00:09:00]
Okay. Anything else I can help you guys with?
Laura Isaac: Unclear to me. So, and intimidating, but, okay. Thank you. All right.
Captain Kirsten Monteleone: Do you guys want complaint now? I think this was maybe given to you.
