Published toward the end of the 4th century by an aristocrat-turned-ascetic, this biography of soldier-turned-bishop Martin of Tours popularized hagiography and cemented it as an emerging Christian tradition. Translated into English by Alexander Roberts in 1894, the Life of St Martin has much to teach the Western Church about the value and dignity of Christian soldiers.
